Aphex Twin PlayStation T-shirt (year unknown)
There have always been more questions than answers concerning the infamous Aphex Twin ‘Loading’ T-shirt. Was it ever officially released by PlayStation? Did it even exist in the first place? And if not, why do people pay thousands of dollars for a ‘vintage’ copy without any provenance?
Supposedly made in a tiny staff-only run of 20 to 50 promotional copies to celebrate an interview with AFX in the UK edition of PlayStation Magazine in 1999, the shirt quickly became the stuff of myths upon surfacing in the early 2000s, eventually selling for around 10K at Ferm Gallery three times in a row, even though no one at PlayStation has ever confirmed the existence of this supposed grail.
So here we have a dark blue specimen in great shape (8/10 at least), printed on a period-correct ‘Made in USA’ blank in Large, found around eight years ago at an undisclosed thriftstore in Belgium. You decide, but beware: this shirt may not exist at all.
